Hands-on Service Opportunities: Helping to Rebuild New Orleans
Volunteer to help rebuild New Orleans! Some communities are frozen in time--devastated by the hurricanes and flood. Please help us rebuild New Orleans by participating in one or more of these exciting service opportunities. We are offering two service projects in the areas of career service and construction. There is no additional cost beyond your regular registration fee and your time. Let's help rebuild New Orleans together!
To sign up for Hands-on Service Opportunities:
- Pre-register now by calling the Workforce Innovations Call Center at
866-524-7458 - Projects are filled on a first come, first served basis.
For each pre-registered service project, volunteers will receive an email confirmation package in June 2008 providing further details on your service opportunity (i.e., what to wear, if you need to bring any ID, description of the day's agenda, etc.). Transportation for each service project is provided and will leave promptly at the start times indicated below and will arrive back at the Convention Center at the end time indicated for each project. All service opportunities will leave from the Convention Center, on Convention Center Boulevard (details will be provided in confirmation package.)

Rebuilding Work Readiness of Our Youth: Career Development Assistance
Tuesday, July 15, 2008
8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Extend a helping hand to a young person. Volunteers will have the opportunity to share their career development experiences. Help coach a young person through mock interviews on the best way to sell themselves in an interview, how to answer difficult questions, how to use success stories and overcome objections. In partnership with The Corps Network, participants will also be able to expose youth through group discussions to the different educational pathways and high-growth, high-demand career options. All activities will be conducted indoors. Give your time to a young person by sharing career awareness knowledge and resources.
The Corps Network is a new multi-site youth Corps for the Greater New Orleans region, based on the Civic Justice Corps model. The Conservation Corps of Greater New Orleans will engage 800 young people, including formerly incarcerated and court-involved youth, in environmental restoration, energy conservation, and restoration of historic structures. The Conservation Corps of Greater New Orleans is a vehicle for systems change: viewing youth as assets, employers as primary partners, justice agencies as allies, and education as a living connection to solutions for community needs. www.corpsnetwork.org/ConservationCorpsofGreaterNewOrleansSiteInformation.asp
Rebuilding Communities: Building One Home at a Time
Thursday, July 17, 2008
1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Assist in relief, recovery and rebuilding efforts by renovating homes for New Orleans residents. Work with members of YouthBuild and The Corps Network on renovating homes in neighborhoods devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Volunteers will have the opportunity to assist in framing, insulation of doors and windows, drywall, green and energy efficient building techniques, and finish carpentry work. No construction experience is required. Work alongside experts who will guide you throughout the day. Volunteers should be prepared for moderately physical, outdoors work. Together we can help New Orleans rebuild!
YouthBuild is a youth and community development program that simultaneously addresses several core issues facing low-income communities: education, employment, crime prevention, and leadership development and housing. For more information see: www.youthbuild.org
